What it does

The Teaching Engine brings together 22 topic engines in one workspace: maths keywords and spelling, place value, comparing and ordering, operations and grouping, a times-table builder, mental sums, number lines, pictorial and bar models, sum-and-difference models, word problems, money, fractions, time, length, mass, volume, measurement conversion, shapes, angles and lines, area and perimeter, and graphs, plus Explain Your Thinking and Error Analysis activities.

Teachers can set the numbers in a fixed example, such as the time on a clock and whether it shows a.m. or p.m., or switch to random practice within grade ranges. Engines can show the mathematics step by step, give hints and feedback, and switch to Pupil View for whole-class display. An annotation layer lets the teacher draw and write over any engine during the lesson.

From lesson to SLS practice

To set practice, teachers choose the topic, level, task and number of questions, generate the activity, preview it in Pupil View, and download it as an SLS-ready ZIP for a Free-Response → Interactive Response question. The engine checks the package before download, and settings can be saved to a file and loaded again later.

Each question is worth one mark, and a pupil's first submitted answer sets that mark; later retries give practice and feedback without changing it.

Free to open in a browser without signing in. Engine settings and on-screen annotations are kept in the browser. Uploading an activity to SLS requires an SLS teacher account.
